The Rinse 09

Bassheads around the globe, The Rinse returns with this week’s new drum & bass selections. For this episode, we have a smooth number from RAM Records’ new signee Bensley, and some dancefloor heaters from Shogun Audio boss Friction, and Viper Recordings’ dynamic duo, Matrix & Futurebound. We also reach back a few years for some classic Future Cut, and some synapse-seizing neurofunk from Emperor. Enjoy!

Bensley – Nocturne (Original Mix) [RAM]

In what’s been a whirlwind 2015 for the burgeoning artist, UK producer Bensley just released his debut album on RAM Records–a 10-track masterpiece with fantasy-themed sound design. Amazingly, it was only a few weeks ago that the producer popped up on the collective radar when his first track Fandango was scooped up by RAM Records. This tune from his album is called Nocturne, and features a syncopated beat laced with a telephone-styled lead. Nocturne perfectly embodies the magic Bensley has captured on his new album Next Generation.

Emperor – SMPL (Original Mix) [Critical Music]

UK neurofunk producer Emperor returns to Critical Music to bring more darkness with his new EP Into Black. The skilled producer set the bar pretty high with his last release on Critical in 2014 called Hello World, but has followed up with what may be his best output to date. The 5-track EP delivers pressurized breaks and sinister basslines, perhaps none more sinister than the bassline featured here in SMPL.

Friction & Ulterior Motive – Curfew (Original Mix) [Shogun Audio]

BBC Radio 1Xtra host and Shogun Audio boss Friction returns with his ‘VS’ series–the third volume of the collaborative series featuring some of D&B’s top producers. This particular release features co-production from Metrik, Dimension, Prolix, and Ulterior Motive. The track selected here is called Curfew and comes by way of Friction and Ulterior Motive–a mighty tag team indeed. The tune is built off of a rhythmic motif with crooning samples sprinkled about for a funky, 2000s vibe.

Future Cut – Prophecy (Original Mix) [V]

Renowned duo Future Cut make this week’s Rinse episode with their 2005 tune, Prophecy. The tune has been in dubplate form for the last decade, finally receiving a digital release this week courtesy of Bryan Gee’s V Recordings. Prophecy is a jazzy workout, with a wah-guitar and sampled break polished with mid-2000s flair. Prophecy comes flanked by another massive tune lifted from the same time period called Out There, and both can now be had at popular digital retailers.

Matrix & Futurebound – Glow Worm (Original Mix) [Viper]

Matrix & Futurebound have been on a tear lately, delivering a string of consecutive hits such as Control, Magnetic Eyes, and All I Know, to name a few. The veterans return for this year’s first release–a dancefloor torpedo called Glow Worm, out on Futurebound’s own Viper Recordings. Glow Worm’s pitch-bending melody and procession of growling mid-bass results in one of the more edgier tracks the duo have produced in the last few years.
